VestaVamps: What’s the best way to clean and store winter shoes and boots? What can be done about salt stains on boots?
Michael Papoutsakis: The best way to store shoes/boots anytime of the year is to have them cleaned, conditioned (leather), polished, and put in boot or shoetrees, preferably cedar wood. Salt stains should be removed as soon as possible to prevent further damage to the leather. Salt stain removers contain vinegar that should neutralize the salt and remove it. Also keep wet boots/shoes away from heat and allow them to dry at room temperature.
VV: What types of shoes can be weatherproofed for any upcoming spring showers? Do you recommend a type of weatherproofing spray that’s commonly found, or is it best to go to your shoemaker for that?
MP: There are weatherproofing or silicone sprays that are available for almost all types of shoes. A quality water and stain protector is a common product for shoe repair shops.
VV: When shoes are stretched, how much of a difference does it really make? Can the calves of boots be stretched as well? What about children’s shoes?
MP: Stretching adult or children shoes works and is permanent. Some shoes, depending on the leather, will stretch more than others, but don't expect a size change. The calves of boots can be stretched as well.
VV: Do you have any advice for how to make your shoes’ lives longer?
MP: Proper care of the upper leather with conditioner, mink oil, polish cream or wax prevents cracking and drying of the leather while keeping it supple. These, along with cedar shoetrees, which will absorb any moisture, help prolong the life of shoes. It is also very important to alternate shoes daily.
VV: I know there is a lot you do besides “heels and toes.” What are some of the more unusual problems you handle?
MP: Along with shoes and boots we repair luggage, purses, jackets, wallets, zippers and most leather items. Unusual problems are something that I see as a challenge to our skills as craftsmen and in New York nothing is really that unusual.
VV: What is your best selling product?
MP: Our best selling products are shoe leather care and shoe fitting and comfort products.
VV: How long has Pavlos Shoe Repair been open, and how did you get into the business?
MP: Pavlos Shoe Repair has been in business in New York City for 36 years. Shoemaking and repairing has been in my family for over 60 years. I got into this business because I was fortunate to learn from the best with the opportunity to continue and improve on what my parents started so long ago.
Reader Question from Vamp Christina in Connecticut: My favorite pair of heels became severely discolored when I wore them in the rain. The heel is leather. Is there anything I can do to fix them? What should I have done to prevent this from happening?
MP: Shoes damaged by water can be repaired. It is difficult to say how well without actually seeing them but in the future polished and silicone sprayed shoes stand the best chance against rain.
