I've gotten into a wintertime habit of keeping a vase of fresh flowers in the apartment, thanks to my niece who brought me a beautiful bunch for no reason in January. I've since been buying flowers from the corner bodega or Whole Foods once, twice, three times a month depending on how long the flowers last. I wish I had had some of these tips for keeping flowers fresh when I started! Still, do some types of flowers just wilt faster? I was disappointed when my white daisies from Whole Foods collapsed and wilted within a week. Shouldn't they have lasted longer?

Some do, yes. But you should also make sure you change the water regularly--that can make a big difference. Also always check the bouquet thoroughly before buying to make sure the flowers haven't already started to turn. Daisies should be easy to spot, but flowers like roses you have to be careful--sellers often peel off the dead layers to try to mask their decay!
