Check out some of the books Vesta's book club has read here!

Links to buy the books as well as links to reader guides help you get ready for your next book club meeting.

From the author of The Secret Life of Bees, The Mermaid Chair is another easy favorite. It was our first book club book pick, and it was a good one! For a summary and reader's guide, visit Sue Monk Kidd's website.

A novel imagining the love affair between Frank Lloyd Wright and Mamah Borthwick Cheney Loving Frank is a captivating story that blurs the line between history and fiction. For an excerpt and reader's guide, visit Random House's website.

Written entirely as letters, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is a story of post-World War II life on the island of Guernsey. It's a fun, fast read filled with likable characters. For more on it and a reader's guide, visit Random House's website.

Yann Martel's novel Life of Pi is a fantastical story with moral implications that are sure to keep your group talking.  Love it or hate it, it's a book that will stay with you for a long time to come (and for the record, we're in the camp that loves it).  For more, see Random House's website.

Now a major motion picture, Ian McEwan's Atonement is a true masterpiece of a novel.  The story has more layers than any one movie could ever convey or any one night of book club could cover.  For more on this or any one of prolific McEwan's book, visit his website.

We'll admit we're suckers for stories about immigration.  That being said, Jhumpa Lahiri's The Namesake is particularly beautiful and compelling.  For more information and a reader guide, visit Houghton Mifflin's Harcourt's website.

Wuthering Heights is Emily Bronte's only novel, and one worth rereading as an adult if you haven't picked it up since high school.  A true love story, Wuthering Heights has inspired many other novels and movies.  For more information, visit this website.

As classically American as John Steinbeck himself, East of Eden is a intricate weaving of two families' lives.  It is an extremely dense book and therefore may be difficult for a monthly book club, but certainly worth a read if the group is up to it.  Check out the Penguin reading guide's website.

While some people may have read this while still in middle school, The Giver is a complex enough story that it's worth a revist as an adult.  It is sure to spark great conversation, and some discussion starters can be found on Lois Lowry's website.

  1. Have a book your book club loved? Let us know about it!
  2. I absolutely love Committed, by Elizabeth Gilbert (who also wrote Eat, Pray, Love -- another favorite!). From www.elizabethgilbert.com, "Gilbert's memoir is ultimately a clear-eyed celebration of love with all the complexity and consequence that real love, in the real world, actually entails." I highly recommend it!

  4. I love some of these books that your book club has read so far! Here are some of my suggestions

Th Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafron (One of my all time fav book)

    Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane

The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein

The Girl With the Dragon Tatoo - Steig Larson

If you are even a 'distant' canine lover...you must read The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein....even if you just enjoy 'family' style novels with an emphasis on proverbial advice you will enjoy this read....also, hope all have checked out Sue Monk Kidd's autobiography before her novels, Secret Life of Bees and Mermaid Chair....excellent insight into the themes of the two books....also, an interesting take on the Salem witch trials via one family's experience in Katherine Howe's The Pysick Book of Deliverance Dane...a mixture of historical fact and fiction.....again, thanks for a fantastic site!
